Consultation has concluded

Town of Walkerville is investigating the possibility of undertaking a weekly Food Organics & Garden Organics (FOGO) collections trial in the Township.

This trial would be opt-in for residents, which would involve a different bin pick-up schedule.

Instead of the normal ‘blue bin once a week and green bin once a fortnight’, participants would instead have a collection schedule of ‘green bin once a week and blue bin once a fortnight’. The yellow bin would continue to be picked up fortnightly.

A weekly FOGO collection could assist greatly with reducing the cost of waste management in the Council area, while also having a benefit on the environment.

In Town of Walkerville’s last bin audit by East Waste, 50% of the contents of our blue bins were food and compostable items that should have gone in the green bin and 10% were packaged food in plastic bags or containers that should have been emptied into the green bin beforehand.

If people in the Township improved their rubbish sorting of food and compostable materials, it could save the Council $96,000 per year.

Residents are always passionate about their bin collection schedule, so Council will be going out to consultation to understand if those who live in the Town of Walkerville have an interest in participating in this trial.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting of 19 June 2023, Council moved a motion to better understand the impacts associated with FOGO bins being collected weekly instead of fortnightly.

The results from this survey will inform a business case for Council about the potential of undertaking a FOGO trial, including the potential costs incurred by Council and the benefits and risks that might be involved with introducing 'Sustainable Kerbside Service'.

The consultation on whether to undertake a FOGO trial will run from 9am on Monday, 4 September 2023, to 5pm on Friday, 29 September 2023.
