Community Engagement Policy

The Town of Walkerville is currently consulting on its draft Community Engagement Policy.

The draft Community Engagement Policy provides a clear, practical and proportionate framework for how Council will undertake community engagement when required under the Local Government Act 1999 (Act) and in compliance with the Community Engagement Charter.

The draft Community Engagement Policy aims to:

• ensure compliance with all mandatory Charter requirements;
• provide flexibility to tailor engagement to the significance of each decision;
• avoid consultation fatigue;
• maintain transparency and accessibility for the community; and
• support efficient operational decision making.
  
  

The draft Community Engagement Policy introduces:

• different categories of consultation, based on the significance and community impact of the decision being considered;
• minimum engagement requirements for each category, as specified by the Charter;
• flexibility in how Council may meet these requirements; and
• an emphasis on deeper engagement for more significant decisions.
  
  

This ensures Council has a clear, structured and compliant approach while retaining the ability to tailor engagement to local needs and capacity.

The draft Community Engagement Policy consultation will run from 9am on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 until 5pm on Monday, 10 August 2026.
