Consultation has concluded

The Town of Walkerville will be undertaking a redevelopment of the 39 Smith Street site, turning it into a state-of-the-art recreation centre, providing a hub for activities and community gatherings for residents of all ages and abilities.

In August 2024, Council reached a significant milestone in the redevelopment plans and selected a contractor for this important project - Hutchinson Builders.

Concept images of 39 Smith Street are now available for the public to view (check out the documents tab in the right-hand side bar) and Council will be accepting any feedback the community may have on the proposed designs.

Council will work closely with Hutchinson Builders - a company that has constructed many similar stadiums and gymnasiums over the past few years and has an excellent track record in meeting timelines and delivering quality recreational facilities - to complete the development.

The envisaged centre will include a multi-purpose, two-court stadium, catering for basketball, netball, badminton and volleyball, as well as other activities including gymnastics, dance and community events.

If the community has any feedback to provide on the proposed 39 Smith Street concept designs, email walkerville@walkerville.sa.gov.au by 5pm on Sunday, 15 September 2024.

Following community consultation, Council will undertake any relevant changes, complete the full detailed design, commence construction and open the new recreation centre by the end of 2025. Demolition of the existing facility is expected to commence in the coming weeks to allow detailed site and soil investigations to take place.

The 39 Smith Street recreation centre redevelopment has been co-funded by the Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR). Council thanks the State Government and State Member for Adelaide, Lucy Hood MP, for their support.

You can view the message from the Mayor and see the concept design video of the design proposal below. Or to find further details on the project, head to the Town of Walkerville website.
